I landed my gig at R/GA in 2002, and by that time I'd already worked on some solid brands like Showtime, HBO, Sprint, and the Truth anti-smoking campaign. But little compares to working on Nike. At a time when there was no such thing as best practices, it was fertile ground for creativity. I shot sneakers with a primitive digital camera using fishing line and desk lamps. We only needed approval from our immediate clients. We were free to experiment, come up with crazy ideas (“every page is a homepage!”), and screw up. We learned to invent on the fly.
A lot has happened in the world of the Internet since then. But making it up as you go along can be unexpectedly powerful, especially when coupled with years of experience working for the world's best agencies and brands.
